Gabrielle Union’s memoir, “We’re Going to Need More Wine,” is a moving account of her life, covering deeply personal experiences such as her harrowing encounter with rape, a memorable and humorous first wedding, and a surprising relationship with NBA star Jason Kidd. Gabrielle Union is fun-knee and brilliant. The book also touches on the challenges she faced dealing with racism in Hollywood, particularly while working on the popular TV show, Friends.
Amidst these powerful stories, what particularly resonates with me, as a father of four, is Union’s revelation about being her dad’s favorite child. It’s the ‘why’ that got me. She said it’s because she’s most like him.
I never considered that potentially being the case with my own kids. I’m one of those “I love all my kids equally” parents.
My feelings towards Gabrielle Union transformed from a mere crush to seeing her as a beloved daughter.
Reflecting on her other book, ‘You Got Anything Stronger?,’ and the heartache she endured with several miscarriages, I found the part where her father joked about her not being woman enough and needing a surrogate to be too much, even for me.
I’m paraphrasing, it’s been a while since I listened to either book, and I definitely don’t want to minimize or demonize her father’s parental contribution.
Oh, and, you definitely want to hear/read about her encounter with the group of Neo-Nazis in King’s Landing, located in Croatia. Cray-cray. Try audible for free.
